It’s why Amazon is successful and Medium is not. Amazon is aggressively pro-customer. Everything is built around their needs. Its success revolves entirely around service to others.
Medium is often ill-conceived, but its conscious decisions — to disable custom URL’s, to include its own logo on 3rd party pages, and to hoard email subscribers from its authors — are aggressively anti-consumer and the results bear that out.
